Bellbird Park Preservation Group has been working with Birdlife Queensland to monitor a pair of Powerful Owls in Woogaroo Creek discovered in 2018. A dead Powerful Owl was later found in April 2019, with cause of death unknown. This arised concern that the existing couple may have been separated. Recently Anne Reardon and her son David were carefully traversing the creekline when they sighted not just one but two Powerful Owls.
This data helps with building a picture of breeding pairs in South-east Queensland. The photos were shared with Ipswich City Council to enhance their records. We are concerned that the development of 12-26 Eugene St will force the pair to abandon their territory due to loss of foraging habitat and disturbance. Similarly, other raptors such as Boobook Owls, Square-tailed Kites, Grey Goshawks, Tawny Frogmouths and Pacific Bazas will also be affected. The Powerful Owl is one of our chosen icons for the group. It is locally significant and is an ambassador for sensitive urban planning as they require all aspects of a healthy ecosystem to survive. Thanks to Anne and David we are now assured that the pair are still intact. Fingers crossed for chicks next year!
